1510 King Street West - Lightening Rod for Community Debate on Affordable Housing

The former single-family house at 1510 King Street was converted to a rooming house years ago and then eventually left vacant in 1994 when the corporation that owned the property went bankrupt and ownership reverted to the province. It was sold to the current owners in 2003 who have since applied to the Toronto and East York Community Council for an amendment to the zoning by-law to allow 20 dwelling units at this site. The council has granted the application, however it is now being appealed to the Ontario Municipal Board by a citizen's group in South Parkdale.

The 2006 Toronto municipal election took place on 13 November 2006 to elect a mayor and 44 city councillors in Toronto, Ontario. In addition, school trustees were elected to the Toronto District School Board, Toronto Catholic District School Board, Conseil 000-081scolaire de district du Centre-Sud-Ouest and Conseil scolaire de district catholique Centre-Sud. The election was held in conjunction with those held in other municipalities in the province of Ontario (see Ontario municipal elections, 2006). In the mayoral646-230 race, incumbent mayor David Miller was re-elected with 57% of the popular vote.There were 38 candidates running for Mayor of Toronto and 238 candidates running for 44 city councillor positions. To date, this represents the largest number HP0-S26 of candidates to ever run in a Toronto municipal 646-656 election. In contrast to the previous election (which had two acclamations), no candidates were unopposed.Provincial legislation passed in May 2006 extended municipal council terms in Ontario to four years rather than three. The council elected in 2006 will thus serve until 2010 rather than 2009
