FAQ - E-mail List Server Administration (Mailman)

Note: For the main PRA lists we use Dada mail.  See here for FAQ.

1) How do I get to the list administration interface?
2) How do I add members to a list?
3) How do I delete members from a list?
4) How do I create a new list?
5) Where do I find all the documentation for the list server?

=========================================

1) How do I get to the list administration interface?

Click here to view a list of Parkdale.TO mailing lists admin links.  (You will need the list password)

2) How do I add members to a list?

In the list admin screen, click 'Membership Management...', then 'Mass Subscription'.  In the text box enter one e-mail address per line.  If you just have one to enter that's ok too.

3) How do I delete members from a list?

In the list admin screen click 'Membership Management...', then 'Membership List'.  Check the 'unsub' checkbox in front of the e-mail address you wish to remove, then click 'Submit Your Changes', below.

4) How do I create a new list?

Create a list:
  • Login to the cPanel parkdale.to administration interface at http://parkdale.to/cpanel  (you will need the cPanel username and password)
  • Click on the Mail icon (top left in icon area)
  • Click on the 'Mailing Lists' link (3rd from bottom)
  • Click 'Add Mailing List' at bottom of page
  • Enter the name and password of the mailing lists (you will need the mailing list passwords)
  • Choose the domain, normally 'parkdale.to' and then click 'Create'.
Set list options
  • Go to the link: http://parkdale.to/mailman/admin (If you need to find this link from memory in the future you can start at the 'Join our e-mail list' link on the PRA site, then 'detail e-mail list page' and then 'link for administrators')
  • Once you are in the mailing list admin page you will see that there are many, many options.  Once the options are set, the mailing list is easy to maintain, however it is important to set the options correctly to start with.  The easiest way is to open two web browser windows and copy and modify the settings from an existing list that is similar to the list you want to create.
  • You should at least set options in the areas listed below.
Options to set:
  • General Options (many..._
  • Non-digest options (to set e-mail footer)
  • Digest options (may wish to disallow use of digest option)
  • Privacy options - Subscription rules
  • Privacy options - Sender rules
  • Archive Options
These options pages don't usually need adjustment, though they might be worth a look:
  • Privacy options - Recipient filters and Spam filters (usually no adjustment necessary here)
  • Bounce processing
  • Mail <> News gateway
  • Auto-responder
  • Content filtering
  • Topics
Finally, you need to add members to the list.  The easiest way is via the 'Mass Subscription' option.

We use Mailman, the GNU Mailing List Manager.
